Dark circles are when the skin under the eye starts to get a slightly different color than your skin tone, it may look purple, brown black depending completely on your skin type. It can also be caused by the puffiness of your eyelids or hollows under the eye that develop with aging.
Dark circles are not a medical problem but they have many reasons as to why it occurs.
Dark circles under the eyes are noticeable and get even more noticeable through time if not taken care of.
HOW IT CAUSES
- Aging: One of the main reasons is aging, as you age the skin loosens and the blood vessels under the skin become more visible.
- Screen Time: using mobiles and laptops during night without proper light or not keeping the recommended distance between your vision and the device leads to dark circles, the skin also starts to become dry which causes the breakdown of collagen and that leads to dark pigmentation under the eyes, the muscles and the blood visibles become visible making the skin in that area appear dark. Along with that it is suggested that an adult should at least get 7 hours of sleep.
- Dehydration: Not consuming enough water can make your skin look more dull and pale and expose dark circles under the eyes.
- Health issues: iron deficiency, lupus as well as allergic reactions can affect the blood vessels and lead to dark circles.
- Lifestyle choices: excessive smoking, consuming alcohol, stress due to academics or work life can be the cause for dark circles.
HOW TO PREVENT THEM
- Sleep: it is important for our body to get enough sleep, for our eyes to be well rested as we all live a busy life and not getting enough sleep makes the dark circles under our eyes even more prominent.
- Cold Compressed: it compresses the blood vessels and reduces their appearance such as ice packs, cold spoons, cold cucumbers all of these can be used to keep the under eye area cool which leads to the reduction of hyperpigmentation under the eyes.
- The sun: Due to the exposure of the uv lights the area under the eyes turns dark also known as hyperpigmentation this happens from the natural uv rays of the sun or if using tanning beds. Protecting your eyes and skin around it with sunglasses, hats and sunscreen can reduce the damage.
- Supplements: vitamin c and vitamin k help in reducing the dilated blood vessels and with routine usage it can completely reduce the dark circles. Conditions like iron deficiency are also the reason for dark circles therefore taking in adequate amounts of iron is important.
