Psoriasis: What you should know

Psoriasis: What you should know

Psoriasis is a chronic skin disease, where there is rapid skin cell turnover and the build of new skin cells on the surface. It causes red itchy skin  and can be even painful for some.

It is known to be an overreaction of the immune system which attacks the healthy skin cells as well. I can also cause other health issues such as eye diseases, heart problems  and even mental health issues.

Psoriasis usually starts at the age of 20 among adults. Here's how to look after yourself

WHAT TO EAT AND WHAT TO DO

  • Fishes such as salmon, tuna  contain omega 3 fatty acids that are anti-inflammatory and help alleviate psoriasis. Other food items such as flaxseeds, sardin, shellfish also contain omega 33 fatty acids
  • Vegetables and fruits are also anti- inflammatory as they have high amount of fiber - green leafy vegetable, blueberries, pumpkins radish all contribute to your health as to having lower glycemic index
  • It is important to reduce saturated fat and increase in healthy fat. Saturated fat that is found in baked and packed food can lead to bad cholesterol but ‘healthy fat’ such as avocado, olives will help in decrease the high chances of other health issues related to psoriasis such as diabetes, stroke
  • Vitamin D is also an important part of the diet, and can help in treating skin - eggs, orange juice should be consumed  for vitamin D.

Having a diet with anti-inflammatory foods can help reduce skin inflammation and to some extent help control psoriasis.”- Dr. Ravali Yalamanchili, dermatologist

  • Reduce the usage of harsh products that is rough on the skin or leads to the breaking of the skin barrier.
  • Avoid scratching, try to divert your mind to be able to distract yourself from the urge, keep your body hydrated. Use a thick moisturizer after bathing and pat down the towel not rub it to your skin.
  • Take your medication on time and fulfill your diet requirements for the reduction of flare-ups.

WHAT TO AVOID

  • Red meat: contains high amounts of saturated fat that can trigger the skin - beef, lamb processed meat like bacon contain high amounts of toxin and they react to the meal and inflame the skin.
  • Alcohol: alcohol disrupts the normal running of the skin barrier which can again contribute in triggering the skin which can lead to irritation, flaking , scaling and itching.
  • Processed food and added sugar: consuming high amounts of packaged products like chips or food like cakes, white bread, soft drinks increases the risk of flare-ups.
